It's amazing to think that only fifteen years ago all visitors to Koh Samui made the long journey south from Bangkok by local bus or a train ride followed by the coconut ferry journey from Kanom - which ran twice weekly.  There are now up to twenty flights a day arriving from Bangkok.  Utapao (near Pattaya), Phyket and Singapore.  Express boats race over from Surat Thani and regular vehicle ferries ply the seas from the deep sea ports of Donsak and Kanom.  There are VIP buses, air-conditioned trains and minibuses coming from all over Thailand to the ports around Surat Thani and Chumphon - in fact so many that the main problem facing travelers is no longer " can we get to the islands" but "what is the best way?".

With out doublt the most convenient way to get to the islands is by plane.  

Bangkok Airways flies directly to Samui, Thai flies to Surat Thani and PB Air fly from Bangkok to Chumphon. Flying to Samui is the best way to get there, it is quick and easy and onward travel from Samui airport is straight forward.  But this does come at the price as Bangkok Airways flights are much more expensive than Thai.  From Bangkok there are between 12 to 17 flights a day depending on the time of year.  It takes one hour and 20 minutes directly to Samui Airport and the cost is THB3,650 each way (6,300 round trip), not including the heft THB500 departure tax levied by Samui Airport (it is a more reasonable THB30 in Bangkok).  

From Utapao (an airport and military base 40 minutes deive east of Pattaya)  there are one or two flights a day (depending on demand), it takes one hour and the cost is THB1,890 (3,780 round trip) not including tax (which is THB500 from Samui and 30 at Utapao).  

From Phuket there are 2 flights a day - it takes 50 minutes andthe cost is THB1,530 (3,060 round trip) not including tax (which is THB500 at Samui and 50 in Phuket).  

From Singapore there is one flight a day - it takes 1 hours 30 minutes and the cost is THB4,000 (THB8,000 round trip) not including tax (which is THB500 in Samui and $15 is Singapore).

A Cheaper but more time-consuming option is to fly into Surat Thani Airport with Thai Airways and take a boat to Samui or Phangan.  Thai Airways has one or two flights every day (depending on demand)  from Bangkok, it takes one hour 10 minutes and cost THB1,850 (3,630 round trip)  including airport tax. 

Songserm have an office at Surat Thani Airport where it is possible to by combined bus and boat tickets to Koh Samui or Koh Phangan. They have a fleet of buses waiting to meet each plane and although during peak season it can appear chaotic, they do to manage to get everyone to their intended destination.  You should remember that if you intend on going directly to the islands, try to catch an early flight as evening flights will not connect to a boat and you may have to stay overnight in Surat Thani.

Another  private small airline, PB Air, flies to Chumphon (time to time) where express boats and speed boats run to Koh Tao.  At present they fly there and back on Fridays and Sundays, but plan to add more soon.  A combined ticket all the way to Koh Tao from Bangkok including transfers costs THB2,850.
