along at 15 meters alongside the world's largest fish has to be one of
life's most unique an amazing experiences. The average whale shark
is between four and six metres long are easily dominates the ocean
around it. It's obviously fully aware of divers, but doesn't seem to
mind the forever. These peaceful creatures can often be seen at
Sail Rock, Samui's best-known dive site. They may represent one of
the ultimate diving experiences, but they are by no means the end of the
story. |
There are 25 reefs off Samui and its
surrounding islands and many of them offer world-class diving and
snorkeling. Sail Rock is probably the best known and is often
rated as the best reef perse in the area by experienced divers, but
there's also a lot of on offer for divers of any ability. |
Closet to Samui is Chaweng Reef, which is a short boat ride away from
Chaweng Beach. The maximum depth is just 7 meters, making it ideal
for the newly qualified diver and snorkellers.
Any diving day
trip from Samui will probably involve a journey to Koh Tao or Angthong
Marine National park. Because of its weak current, KOh
Tao is an ideal place to learn to dive. It also has the most
reefs in the area, so it's much easier to avoid the crowds. With
depths on one reef, Shark Island, reaching 25 metres, there's
plenty to keep the more experienced diver entertained as well.
Hardcore enthusiasts even have the option of basing themselves on Koh
Tao for a week or so and enjoying multiple daily dives. |
|
Due to poor visibility caused by natural erosion, only the three
northernmost reefs of Anything are worth diving. Of these, Koh Yippon is
considers by many to be one of the best dive sites in the area: the
coral is very colorful and in totally pristine condition and huge
boulders create swim through where divers can see large red snappers and
groupers. |
|
The most celebrated swim through in the area can be found back at Sail
Rock. Swimming up this wid naturally formed rock chimney from an
opening at 18 metres to the exit at 10 metres is an awesome
experience. But once you've done it there's many more similarly
breath-taking experiences awaiting you at Samui's other sites. |
